Stop Swaying in The Golf Swing – The Fix

Swaying off the golf ball in the backswing is a huge mistake average recreational golfer commit on the range. It causes the bottom of their golf swing to fall much behind the correct spot and become a reason for contact issues and direction. Read on to find out how to stop swaying off in the golf swing.


The problem

To find out how much you sway, follow these steps:

  1. Put a reference stick on the ground bisecting your stance. 

  2. Lift the club and go for the backswing, you will notice the right foot rolling out slightly, and the pressure of the back foot (for right-handers) also shifts outside.

  3. You will notice the pelvis drifting away from the target, and the right knee will also flex, which does not give you enough room to get back easily.


The drill

  1. Put a golf ball and place it underneath the outstep of your back foot (trailing foot), which will tilt it inside.

  2. Place the reference stick on the ground in the middle of your stance. A second golf ball that you want to hit should lie in the middle.

  3. Now, swing to the top, the ball underneath the back foot wouldn’t allow it to move outside, and you will feel pressure on the instep. The right leg will lose flex about 10 degrees and remain almost straight, giving you a powerful position. The right leg will flex as intended, and you will also get a centered hip movement.

  4. You will be able to push down to the ground and explode to a tall finish.


Summary

To control the sway and pressure shifting outside your trailing foot, put a golf ball underneath the outstep of your right foot that will now tilt inside. Practice a couple of swings, and you will notice the flex in the back leg has gone considerably, your hips are rotating at the center position, and you have more room to strike at the ball with force.
